FAQ

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is mined from the Earth.  There are six different types of Asbestos:

  • Chrysotile (the most common of all types)
  • Amosite
  • Crocidolite
  • Termolite
  • Anthophylite
  • Actinolite

Due to the fibers of this mineral being virtually indestructible, Asbestos was (as is still today) used around the world in well over 3,000 different products.  Commonly Asbestos was used as; a insulator for water/heating systems, in floor tiles and vinyl flooring, added to joint compounds and plasters, and many more products.

Yes, Asbestos has been directly linked to causing the following;

  • Mesothelioma
  • Asbestosis
  • Lung Cancer

When dust fibers of this material are present in the air they can be inhaled or ingested.  Once trapped in the body those fiber can cause health issues such as scaring of the lungs, inflammation, and tumor growth.

Asbestos was commonly used as an insulator, or as an additive to residential and commercial building materials.   Due to the mineral fibers being nearly indestructible, Asbestos was used in over 3,500 different materials.  Commonly Asbestos is found in;

  • Tile or vinyl flooring
  • Insulation around piping
  • Cement style/type siding materials
  • Plaster and joint compounds
  • Wallboard
  • Layin-in panels
  • Adhesives
  • Roofing felt

Many homes/buildings built before 1984 are likely to contain some form of Asbestos in the building materials.  Testing for Asbestos is a simple way to ensure that your home, or building, is safe for all who occupy it.  Studies show that most people spend as much as 90 percent of their time indoors, making our indoor air quality just a important as our outdoor air quality.

Yes, and you have the right to test (and you should should test) any house, or building, for Asbestos before you purchase it.  The National Realtors Association of America actually recommends having a Home Inspection prior to purchasing a property.  In fact they have even created countless numbers of articles and marketing pieces for distribution to home buyers which Realtors can provide to their clients during the home buying transaction.

For Asbestos testing our technicians may need anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours inside of a property, (based on the overall size of the home and number of materials being tested).  Test results from the Laboratory can be provided in anywhere from 24 hours to 5 days, (from drop-off time) based on when you request to have the results back (rushed Sample orders to include a premium  fee).  Our Survey Reports can be emailed to you the same day we have the results back from the Laboratory.

The Asbestos Survey report will show a list of each sample that was collected (with a description), where in the property the sample was collected from, information regarding the Lab report and it’s findings as to whether or not each tested positive for Asbestos within it, and what steps to take moving forward if Asbestos based materials were in the home.

The Survey also meets all the needed AHERA, E.P.A. and Oregon State requirements for Asbestos Surveying for Inspections, Renovation, and Demolition.

Yes, our team works directly with homeowners, builders/developers, and Realtors.  Once your Asbestos Survey Report is completed we will provide you with detailed results, and any recommended actions to take, as well as provide a copy of the report to your Realtor if you like.  We understand that if the home tests positive for Asbestos, and action steps are recommended, your Realtor will need our detailed report to use when negotiating the purchase of the property.

If your home test positive for Asbestos containing materials, our report will have recommendation of actions to take.  Such steps may include any of the following;

  • Removal
  • Repair
  • Encapsulation
  • Enclosure
  • Other

Based on our findings, and recommendations, you the choice of how/if you move forward will ultimately be your decision as the owner of the property.

Asbestos abatement costs may vary based on the home’s size, construction style, foundation type, and more.  Generally on a small remodel costs will average between $1,000 and $3,000.    An upfront quote is always the best way to determine exactly what to budget for the work in advance.
